Tonos are ghostly animal creatures on Mexico’s Costa Chica that are symbiotically linked to the region’s inhabitants. Ester, whose tono is a jaguar, recalls the flight of her ancestors and accompanies women during childbirth. Santos tends his cattle and lives as a crocodile in the river. Juli swims in the sea as a fish while she hauls in fishing nets on a boat. But the ghosts also tell of climate change and the historical repercussions of colonialism and slavery.
