Nerjiss, Liemar, Alper, and Furkan are in the second grade in Vienna’s largest elementary school in Favoriten, the 10th district. Ruth Beckermann accompanied the class with her camera for three years—from the very basics to their first test, from a trip to the mosque to a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, from parent-teacher conferences to carnival. As the children prepare for secondary school, their learning environment begins to crumble. And when the teacher, Ms. Idiskut, becomes pregnant, there’s no one to replace her.
