Vienna 1959. The city as a tunnel of horror where everything seems haunted and fascism reigns in altered guises. Four angry young citizens carry out a misguided revolution of sorts — by reading Bataille, Camus, and Sartre, killing cats and robbing people at night. Based on Elfriede Jelinek’s “Die Ausgesperrten” (“Wonderful, wonderful Times”), Franz Novotny has created an expressive, painfully screaming portrait of the immediate post-war generation and its failed attempts to escape.
