Shortly before the annexation of Austria to the third Reich, Franz, a boy from the provinces, begins his apprenticeship in Otto Trsnjek’s tobacco shop in Vienna. There, he becomes friends with Sigmund Freud, with whom he henceforth discusses the sorrows of his love life. Der Trafikant, based on the eponymous bestseller by Robert Seethaler, speaks poignantly and disturbingly of first love and the hardships of becoming an adult during an era in which civil courage and sympathy are no longer seen as basic values.
