A village disappears. Yet who is to blame for the demise of the medieval community of a few stone houses trying to eke out a meagre existence? Is it the outsider Walter, a friend of the landlord who has joined the farmers? Is it the map painter who is traveling through the country? Or is it, indeed, the foreigners who are being pilloried after the barn fire? Athina Rachel Tsangari’s first English-language film, based on the bestseller by Jim Crace and shot on grainy 16mm material, is a farewell painted in grandiose images: the pastoral idyll turns into pure hallucination.
