No Simple Way Home
Documentary Film, KE/SS/ZA 2022, DCP, 82 min, OmeUA documentary about the own family, whose biography is tightly linked to the history of the still-young South Sudan. Akuol de Mabior’s father once led the independence movement, her mother is now one of the vice presidents of the state that has existed since 2011, and her sister helps distribute relief supplies to flood victims. The director, who grew up in exile, explores the questions of what it means to place the nation above the family—and how a place, shaped by civil war, could ever become home.
