Jürgen Jürges – Immigrant Testimony
Jürgen Jürges is one of the greatest image creators in European cinema and yet is largely unknown to a wide audience. This has to do with his quiet manner, and possibly also with the unusual diversity of his filmography. Jürges has never committed himself to a single trademark and has always embraced new settings, perspectives and narrative styles: from Rainer Werner Fassbinder (with whom he has worked many times, including Angst essen Seele auf and Fontane Effi Briest) to Michael Haneke (including Funny Games, Code inconnu), from Wim Wenders (In weit Ferne, so nah!) to Uli Edel (Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo), from Tankred Dorst (Eisenhans) to Ilja Chrschanowski (DAU), from Roland Klick to Andreas Kleinert, from Helma Sanders-Brahms to Robert van Ackeren. What unites his works, for all their diversity, is an attentive testimony, a documentary ethos that permeates and authenticates the fiction. We look forward to talking to Jürges about his working method(s) using the concrete example of some selected – and stylistically very different – projects. With Code inconnu and Eisenhans, we are showing two Jürges works in full length on 35mm.
