Jury Statement:
Austria, the land of mountains, loved by many, until they are forced to live in isolation – sometimes for weeks, months, or even years – in a camp at 1,300 meters above sea level. The director and her team have made it their mission to uncover the hidden injustices in Tirol, which shock with their extent. The shots of the beautiful Tyrolean nature are accompanied by a bitter aftertaste, making it almost impossible to fully enjoy these views.
One of the great strengths of this film is the way it introduces and familiarizes us with the asylum seekers. Scenes where the affected individuals talk to their relatives, have fun with others, and encourage each other, give the documentary the power to evoke empathy and help us to put ourselves in their shoes. Through the phone calls in the film, it becomes evident that the responsible agency is downplaying the situation.
Despite all the obstacles, the team succeeds in conveying a comprehensive picture of the situation. The camera supports the content of the documentary and adds an additional layer through thoughtful composition. Moreover, the creative editing emphasizes the contrast between a place of recreation and the hopelessness that persists.
